A Bit Down & Out

I'm three weeks into a grade 2 calf strain from a misfire kick on cold morning,

2 weeks on a smashed thumb via a ball peen hammer and it's all taking it's toll.

Both are way more of hassle than I'd like to be dealing with right now

and much more pain than I think should be involved with both mishaps.

I had to miss the first round of the So Cal Vintage Series,

I'm not sure I'll be able to kick my bike over for the another 3 weeks

not to mention the day to day.

My whiny doldrums am not stoked.

The other day Mike and I went to Perris raceway to mess around on the track & on the way in Mike noticed the sign read the oldest track in So Cal.

This morning I stumbled across this link with some of the history and a couple pages of photos, I've been going there for years and had no idea.

This was the day after a big rain back in 2000, Bob & I took the Attex 500 SuperChief out to Lake Elsinore.

I think that's when we decided a 500cc twin cylinder 2 stroke was way too much for a vehicle with no suspension or seat belts, I sold it shortly after that.

Yesterday I found out I was nearly out of brakes.

When I used to get new bikes every year I'd bring them home, tear them down to the frame leaving just the motor in & make it mine.

One of the things I always did is pull the calipers clean up the castings, cut off all the cheap Christmas trash, polish the shoe guide pins, drain the whale blubber brake fluid they shipped the bike with and put the good stuff in.

I had to replace the shoes anyway so today I gave this bike the same treatment.

Riding these bikes I always figured I was going to get hurt no matter what, everybody does and I didn't want equipment failure to be the reason.

It worked, every time I've found myself in the ER it was my fault not the bike.

Enough MX, Back to building bikes (maybe).

2012 SX Season

This Saturday marks the first race of the 2012 SX season, Anaheim 1.

For the first time in many years there's 5 or 6 guys that can win on any given night & if everyone stays healthy it should be a great season.

It's supposed to be 86º today so I'm going to the track.

39 years ago I was messing around with my bicycle in the garage while my father was digging around for something or other (non MC related) and I said "hey Dad I really want to get a motorcycle".

He grumbled something and kept digging through a box.

While I kept pushing the issue, he found what he was looking for, walked over to me and said well, when you get that bike you might need this and handed me this plug keeper/wrench.

I was stoked, I remember thinking now all I need is a bike and for his sake it did shut me up for a couple of weeks.

I told him the other day I saw these things going for $300 plus on the ebay.

He said "you know I was just letting you borrow it."

I spent a good portion of the day making two stainless pipe clamps.

You'd think I'd get used to the fact that everything takes me at least twice as long as I think it should.

Now to get everything matched, lined up & make some brackets to the clamps.

I think Bob's going with black pipes so these should look pretty nice, maybe tumbled?

No Knee Knockin

One of my big twin pet peeves is hitting my knee on the air cleaner.

My left knee rests nicely on the expensive paint job that is my tank & the other is ten inches out in wind.

So in our never ending quest for betterment we somehow knocked off nearly a 1/2" of the width of our current air cleaner, pictured is the first sample.

I've got a good amount of miles on this one and it's feeling real nice.

We'll see where it ends up.

Let's use 1/4" SS rod. OK, we need a stainless clevis,

well we have some round bar and an angle grinder.

It's too flexi let's try a gusset and blend in all nice.

It seems with all the commerce going on around here lately Maximum Bob has been a victim of neglect.

I'm kind of new to this repurposing parts thing but Bob liked the idea of using these pedals & also wanted to improve the reach and hopefully not to have to take a foot off the pegs to use the brake or clutch. The brake worked out nicely, here's what we came up with for the clutch.

The linkage rod is a janky looking test unit soon to be replaced with stainless and heim joints or a clevis of some sort.

The original silencer on my old RM125 was thrashed, so I found a late 90's stainless Pro circuit unit on the e bay for $8.

I ended up not only fitting the slip joint but I had cut the can way down. Then cut & drilled a SS bracket and spring loop.

Much better.

I'm hoping for a little more bottom end out of this pig.

Six months ago I was hell bent on walking away from all of this and had every intention of doing so.

After going through what was basically an intervention conducted by my closest friends & family, I decided to give the parts business another go.

I realized not only do we have quite a few new things that will be super fun to bring to life, I also had some existing ideas that were never put to use.

These are them.

We're including a slotted dome bolt as well as the flat head socket bolt with every air cleaner so you can change up the flavor a bit.

During the AC project we developed a great relationship with the guys at Uni Filter together we came up with right foam density for a BCM propriety big twin filter element. Uni filter cuts and glues the filter specifically for us to ensure the best fit.
