You would be right, they are a blast. i still ride the one my dad raced in the early 70's, basically a "deer hunter orange" version of the cart in the middle of the "film strip" you posted. Great time on the cheap.
Traded a kid a ten speed for a pretty complete kart (sans engine), that I think he stole. Couldn't afford an engine, so my brother and I would drag it up the steepest roads we could find, he'd push, hop an the back and we'd howl like monkeys as we're passing cars on the way down. Good times indeed.
